GAME STORY

Smith's hat trick, late Miller goal lift Central past Westfield, 9-7

By JOHN DOE
Herald Staff Writer

CENTERVILLE — For three quarters, Central couldn't shake Westfield. In the fourth, it finally found a way.

Senior attackman Tom Smith tied the game with 6:30 left to complete his hat trick, and Mike Miller scored the go-ahead goal off a feed from Dave Jones with 3:12 to play as Central rallied past Westfield, 9-7, on Saturday.

“We kept telling them it was a four-quarter game,” Central coach Bill Walker said. “Nobody panicked.”

Central led 5-3 at the half, but Westfield scored three times in the third quarter, including the last of Rob Wilson's three goals, to tie it, 6-6. Jim Taylor then put the visitors ahead, 7-6, with 8:44 left.

Smith answered less than three minutes later. After Miller's goal, Chris Brown added insurance with 1:20 left.

Jones finished with two goals and two assists, and Brown had a goal and two assists. Goalie Steve Johnson made 14 saves for Central (11-2), which plays at Northfield on Tuesday.

For booster clubs

A fundraiser built on your history

Most programs run Banner Years through the booster club, so it costs the department nothing. Packages can pay for themselves three ways.

01

Posters you resell

We design limited-run posters of your title teams, legends and big nights. Your merch table or online store sells them, and the club keeps the margin.

02

Sponsor-backed series

A weekly “This Week in [Mascot] History” post or video, each one presented by a local business. Sponsor fees can cover the package and then some.

03

Event-night packages

Hall-of-fame, anniversary and senior nights get a scoreboard tribute video, inductee posters and commemorative prints families can buy.

Sponsor spotlight

Put the local BBQ joint on the scoreboard of history

The pizza place, the BBQ joint and the corner bar already back your program. A “presented by” credit on a history series gives them something fans actually look at every week. That turns a sponsor ask into a sponsor yes.

  • “Presented by” credit on a recurring history series
  • Business featured in a custom era-style sponsor slide
  • Story mentions and game-night video credits

How we do it

From the archive to the moment

The clipping is where it starts. We pull the original coverage of your biggest games, then rebuild the night visually with our own design, stat callouts and captions in your colors: the headline, the score, the names, the photo. One look and you're back in the bleachers.

In Their Own Words: the legends tell the story

Premium add-on · Legends, firsthand

The clipping tells you what happened. The player tells you what it felt like.

We track down the stars of your banner years, send them a short questionnaire and record a conversation. Then we lay their voice over the moment we rebuilt from the newspaper: the headline, the scoreboard and the photo, with the person who made the play telling you about it. No one else can tell that part of the story.

02

Reunion episodes

Two or three teammates from a title team on one call, reliving the run together. Built for anniversaries, reunions and hall-of-fame nights.

03

The full conversation

Every interview can also be delivered as a long-form audio episode, ready for your program’s podcast, website or alumni newsletter.

Quarterbacks and goalies, sprinters and setters, wrestlers, swimmers and coxswains: every sport, every era.

Signed release first. Nothing with a player’s voice, words or face is published until they sign a release, and minors need a parent or guardian’s consent. Their photos stay theirs, and every original comes back.

Mockups are samples: the Cedar Creek Mustangs and J. Davis of Lincoln High are fictional, and no real athlete is quoted. Real interviews are used only with the participant’s signed release.

FAQ

Questions boosters ask

Where does the material come from?

Two places. First, the hometown newspaper archive: the game stories, box scores, photos and All-County lists that covered your program when it happened. Second, your community: team and family photos, game programs, booster records, home video and Hudl film. Original newspaper content is credited to its publisher.

Who usually pays for it?

Most programs run it through the booster club, so it costs the athletic department nothing. Many clubs cover it with a presenting sponsor plus poster or print sales.

Can we resell posters and prints?

Yes. Limited-run posters and framed prints are built for booster merch tables and online stores, and your club keeps the margin. We quote print runs per order so you know your margin up front.

What about school logos and athlete permissions?

We use school logos and marks only with the school's permission. We get releases for featured athletes and parent or guardian consent for minors, and we follow your district's media policy.

Which sports do you cover?

Every sport, every era. If the paper wrote about it, we can bring it back. That means football, basketball, baseball, softball, lacrosse, soccer, hockey, wrestling, track and field, cross country, volleyball, swimming and diving, tennis, golf, field hockey, cheer and dance, rowing and water polo, for boys' and girls' programs alike. Texas high school football is our home base, but if your sport made the sports page, we can rebuild it.

Can you interview our former players?

Yes. With our In Their Own Words add-on, we reach out to your legends with a short questionnaire and a recorded phone or video call, then use their voice and words in the slides, video, quote cards and then-and-now player cards. Nothing is published until each participant signs a release, minors need a parent or guardian's consent, and we follow your district's media policy.

How long does it take?

We can time delivery to your date, whether it's senior night, a playoff run, the banquet or a hall-of-fame night. Tell us your date when you request a quote and we'll confirm the timeline.

Is the free sample really free?

Yes. Send one photo and a favorite stat or story, and we'll make you a sample slide. No obligation.
